The physician assistant job description entails the duties and functions that they are required to do under the supervision of a medical doctor. The training program is very intense because they must be able to carry out duties without specific instructions by the physician, which is the reason that this position is so much in demand.

The training program requires two years of advanced training for those who already have college credits in the medical field. Those who do not have enough college credits must attend an accredited college for four years. The student will be doing lab work and classroom studies that will enable them to carry out the duties of a PA.

The training program that the Physician Assistant must undergo prepares them to work in multiple positions. The different options that they can select will determine what their job description might entail. The training program consists of clinical training in the following health care facilities.

  • The student must work under the supervision of medical physicians in family medicine.
  • The student works under supervision with doctors that are Internal Medicine professionals.
  • The student works under the supervision of doctors who are specialists in the field of pediatrics.
  • The student works under the supervision of doctors who are specialists in the field of geriatrics. This is the care of elderly people both physical and mental.
  • The student works under the supervision of specialists who work in the field of pre-natal/ON/GYN specialists.
  • The student works under the supervision of doctors who are in charge of the emergency rooms. In this capacity, they may work with many different specialists who represent many different fields of medicine.

Health Care Professionals

The physician assistant is often referred to as a health care professional and their job description will depend on the type of physician and/or specialist’s office in which they work. All PA’s must do some basic things when they are working in a medical office.

The Physician Assistant job description is very similar to an actual physician although they must consult a physician prior to giving care. They are expected to greet the patient and take their vital signs in most office situations. The job might include getting the history of the patient and charting everything that is said so the doctor will have reference to what the patients’ needs.

The Physician Assistant might go ahead and lay out any instruments or materials needed for the physician to examine the patient. The job description will vary depending on the field in which they are working with the doctor.
